5.0. MID YEAR PROJECT

Titile: DANCE TO TELL A STORY

This is an installation that is meant to excite the user. The power of telling the story has been invested in the user, therefore the user tells the story.

Conceptual Statement

Storytelling has lived with us since the generations of our great grandfathers when knowledge, ethical morals and cultural traditions were transferred to other generations by oral delivery. Today the cultural identity of a group of people is being eroded under the influence of technology. One may ask; what then is a cultural identity? This is music, past trends, history, values among others of a group of people.

This project seeks to make the transition from oral traditional storytelling ways onto interactive media platform and how these oral traditions can be retold and preserve in the wake of technological advancement and the widely use of digital tools to create digital content.

6.0. FINAL COLLABORATIVE PROJECT

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

PROJECT CONCEPT

The concept of the collaborative project I intend to undertake is base on Traditional Storytelling in a new way using digital means and tools. Everyone likes stories and storytelling was used as a vehicle to educate and transfer knowledge that teaches moral standards, values, norms etc in the past. Currently the use of technology in our everyday lives and urbanization has made difficult to access these knowledge from our grand fathers who have acquired these knowledge over time.

PROJECT PROPOSAL

Outline/Conceptual Framework

This project is and extension of my midyear project “Dance to tell a Story” which explores adapting traditional storytelling onto interactive media in an information age. The rational for this project is based on the fact that everyone loves to tell or listen to stories because of the information it carries therefore how can lovers of storytelling can still enjoy these stories outside the traditional storytelling settings such as gathering around fire to catch some warmth or under moonlight settings.

New Dimension/Description of Project

The initial concept for my project hasn’t changed that much after presentation and feedback I received from my lecturers and colleagues except for the fact that I have taken out some aspects like the use of a performer in the storytelling act. I’m no more using the performer in this project and re-packaged the same concept of telling story/narrative centered on an interactive space using a mat and a stool. The idea is to create an interactive way of telling story where the user is the storyteller in a single space but different spots. The stool and mat are tools employed so the user can access in order to narrate or tell the story. The mat and stool will be connected with sensors for the user who is the storyteller, not a creator of the story. One has to access these props as hotspots to tell the story. In short there are three places that the user who is the storyteller has to interact with for the story to be told. The story will be divided into three parts and each segment is assigned to one of these segments.

6.3. TESTING PLAN

The concept for my project is to translate and adopt narrative/stories using sound in an interactive way onto digital platform. I will situate this project under the umbrella of oral traditional storytelling. This project is to identify and develop other ways of telling stories in a digital way that is engaging, interacting and entertaining people. The description of the main aspects of my project is centered on the functionality of the technology im using for this project, which revolves around an interactor who walks into space to tell a story by preforming some activities and movement. Additionally, I am using pressure mats (sensors) to trigger sections of the narrative. I am not testing for the quality of the audio file for this project at this stage but I have recorded a demo (self made) recording for this testing, which has been edited. It will afford me the opportunity to fine-tune the final narrative in terms of the directives and clue for interaction.

6.4. Expectation

Within the framework of testing, I expect the interactor to walk into demarcated space without knowing what is going to happen. Just when presence is detected it triggers an audio file by hearing a welcome response, directs as to what one has to do and final clues to proceed and engage the application. It will also afford me the opportunity to make changes to improve on the setup.

6.5. Feedback after Beta presentation

Testing was very successful and a useful exercise. The only slight hitch was the trigger pads being controlled by the Arduino was working but could not trigger the sound file in the main Max programming.

It also gave me some opportunity to get feedback from some of my colleagues and supervisors. The most important of it was the consideration of the experience the user will have in terms of interaction. Another point was also the length of the narrative being told.
